Why are Frozen Seafood Products a Better Alternative for Busy Moms?

Pregnant Woman buying frozen food and holding a deep-frozen product in a supermarket

Nowadays, people are constantly moving due to a demanding work schedule and family obligations, including moms. One consequence of the busy life is that food may be eaten in a rush.

Usually, with one hand, while the other is used to navigate the vehicle, sending messages on their mobile phone while commuting, or type on their computer while at work and at the same time eating lunch. Busy moms may not have the time to cook family meals.

Fortunately, processed frozen foods can help to reduce more than half of your cooking time, giving you just enough time to whip some healthy meals for you and your family.

Frozen foods are half-cooked meals that are stored for next use in a freezer. Since most of the work is finished, busy moms can heat the food for a few minutes and perhaps add a few ingredients and serve, saving you time and energy.

Freezing is a method of natural preservation and does not require additional preservatives. By freezing, vitamins, minerals, and important nutrients are locked in. Frozen food, therefore, is a real alternative to fresh food, which is just as nutritionally healthy, especially if you have a busy schedule.

EB’s processed frozen seafood products have their nutrients locked in, unlike fresh produce that loses some nutrients during storage over time. In general, the nutrient content of frozen seafood is the same and, in some cases, much greater than that of its fresh counterparts. Generally, the mineral content remains the same as that found in fresh foods.

Why Buy Frozen Seafood?

The best backup choice for busy moms is frozen seafood and vegetables. They can easily be a genuine alternative to fresh food that takes longer preparation and cook time. It’s just as good nutritionally as fresh. Besides, after the day’s work, you need something you can easily cook without adding to the day’s stress.

If you and your family want to have a healthy, nutritious diet but lack time to cook fresh food, it can be a great source of nutrients to have processed frozen seafood products, vegetables, and fruits in your freezer.

Must-have Frozen Seafood for Busy Moms

a. Prawns and Shrimp

An essential addition to any freezer is prawns or frozen shrimp products from EB Frozen Food such as Prawn Paste, Tiger Prawn Roll and Shrimp Wonton.

They don’t take long to defrost and are a flexible ingredient — you can use cold water and hold them in the bag during thawing. It is easy to cook or added to a versatile food. For those who fancy Prawn Paste and Tiger Prawn Roll, the good news is defrosting is not required. In fact, you can directly cook them from frozen giving busy moms great convenience.

b) Fish and Crabs

Onboard the ships, commercially captured fish is flash-frozen to hold nutrients, kill parasites and make it last longer. Although white fish can dry out a bit, oily fish such as salmon and tuna freeze well.

Frozen fish products of EB Frozen Food like the Fried Fish Ball, Crab Nugget, Cooked Fish Ball, or Fish Roe Lucky Bag are easy to thaw and don’t take long to cook. It also is used as an ingredient for versatile foods. When it comes to Fish Roe Lucky Bag, it is made with premium surimi and full of fish roe make this successful combination creates an unprecedented delicacy experience.

c) Finger Food

Finger Food are quick and easy to cook. The Chicken Series is sweet, fragrant, and nutritious — cooked through tender, marinated chicken breast, mushrooms, and scallions. Finger foods like the Crispy Chicken Wonton, Chicken Roll (Cheese), Chicken Roll (Salted Egg), etc., are available on EB Frozen Food. Seafood finger foods like Crab Stick Roll, Fish Chip, Golden Fish Chip, etc., are also available. These fresh and flavorful finger foods are excellent for busy moms; they could double as a main in larger servings and accompanied by side dishes.

Using Frozen Seafood

From a food safety point of view, it is critical not to refreeze after the product has been thawed. Most frozen crumbed foods are cooked from frozen, so you don’t have to think ahead. And prawns are quickly thawed by putting cold water in a bowl and then draining in a sieve.

A variety of cooking methods are mentioned on the label. We do not suggest deep or shallow frying, as these methods add a lot of fat and kilojoules unnecessarily. Oven-baking is a better way to cook crumbed products. Stir-fry foods such as prawns.

In a Nutshell

Finally, not only are EB’s frozen seafood products fast and simple to prepare, but they also help reduce food wastage. By using just as much as you need and throwing the rest of your frozen food back in the fridge, you can easily manage your portions, which in turn saves you cash from not having to throw left-overs away. Seaweed Soup With Prawn Paste

Seaweed Soup With Prawn Paste

The seaweed soup with prawn paste is light, healthy, and highly nutritious. It’s very simple to cook and comes with many nutritional benefits. Moreover, there is a surprisingly sweet and yummy taste that comes with a warm seaweed soup. Enjoying this delicious meal with your family during either cold or hot weather.

Different sources of protein (e.g., chicken, beef, fish, mussels, or tinned tuna) can be cooked with the soup along with light seasoning (salt, pepper, garlic, and sesame oil). When all these ingredients come together, the result is a nutritious soup that is immune-boosting and gut-healing.

High Nutritional Value

Not only is seaweed soup with prawn paste delicious, but it also has high nutritional value. The seaweed contains a lot of unsaturated fatty acids, choline, iron, etc. that lower blood lipids and even clear lung heat and diuresis. They are one of the superfoods of nature and contain a plentiful supply of minerals and nutrients.

The seaweed is believed to provide an excellent supply of iodine that is necessary for maintaining a healthy thyroid, high in antioxidants and calcium, regulates and purifies our blood, and helps encourage weight loss.

1. How to Get Started

When cooking this soup, you need to use the dried seaweed laver. The most popular variety is the purple laver, which is sold in the processed seafood product section of most grocery stores. It is often branded as “Porphyra,” which is just the formal name.

There are typically four round discs of dried seaweed laver inside the pack. This is the form in which they are naturally dried on a flat surface when laid-out. If 80g of dried seaweed laver is included in your whole kit, each disc should be around 20g.

Depending on how much soup you want to make, use half to one whole disc. You can either tear it with your fingers or hack it up with a pair of scissors. The dried seaweed laver can be added to the soup directly — pre-soaking is not necessary.

2. Making Prawn Paste

MY Daun Prawn Paste (Small leaf) 130g

Prawn paste is mainly produced from salt-mixed finely crushed prawns. Put the prawn, salt, onion, pepper, baking powder, tapioca starch, oil, sugar, and white pepper in a blender and blend until the mixture is smooth. The mixture can be kept in the fridge for up to two days.

Of course, this process can be cumbersome for a lot of people who do not have the time, which is why EB Frozen Food has prepared MY Daun Prawn Paste. A must in any freezer staple, MY Daun Prawn Paste are a delightful addition to hotpots, soups or even stir-fries.

Made by using big chunks of high-quality prawns, these beautiful leaf-shaped prawn paste makes any dish look more appetising. The best part, you can cook it from frozen, no waiting time needed!

3. Yummy Addition

Another nutrient-dense addition to seaweed soup is eggs. The days when dietary cholesterols were mistaken as the culprit of heart diseases are gone. Eggs, particularly the yolk, contains a wide range of nutrients, including many vitamins that are fat-solvable. Besides the aforementioned nutritious reasons, eggs and seaweed is a yummy combo of soups and Asian recipes.

10 Tips for Handling Frozen Food

10 Tips for Handling Frozen Food

tips for handling frozen food

Did you know that at 10°C, a temperature lower than room temperature, bacteria on your food can double every fifteen minutes? Therefore, ensuring that your frozen foods are being appropriately handled across all stages, from buying to storage and thawing, will prevent bacteria from breeding in your kitchen.

When it comes to frozen foods, it is essential to know proper handling methods to ensure freshness. The appropriate handling of your frozen foods in the kitchen is vital to protect it from any contamination. Here are ten tips for handling frozen food.

1. When shopping, leave the frozen foods until the end

When shopping for frozen foods in the mall, leave them until the end of your shopping to add it to your trolley so that it doesn’t start defrosting. When you get home, cook it right away or store it in the freezer immediately.

2. Transport frozen foods using the appropriate measures

If possible, transport frozen foods from the market to your home using a cool box. Other materials such as padded cool bags, fleece jackets, or fleece blankets are also ideal. In addition, make sure that your frozen products are tightly packed.

3. Abide by the manufacturer's instructions

Carefully read and understand the manufacturer’s cooking and handling instructions for the frozen foods to ensure that it retains its best quality.

4. Leave the food in its packaging when defrosting

When thawing, leave the food in its packaging to avoid cross-contamination and stop the food from drying out. For instance, chicken juices shouldn’t come in contact with other foods.

5. Defrost according to the manufacturer's instructions

Some frozen foods can be cooked as soon as you bring them out from the freezer without thawing. For instance, EB Frozen Food’s star product, Small Leaf Prawn Paste allows you to cook from frozen. If thawing is needed, ensure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions to get the best out of it.

6. Vegetables should be blast frozen

Frozen vegetables are healthy. After harvesting, they are blast frozen immediately while all the vitamins and other nutrients are still intact. Blast freezing your vegetables will retain its nutrients for a long time. Fresh vegetables often lose their nutrients during long transportation routes. When they’re frozen, the valuable nutrients remain intact. Therefore, ensure that you keep your freshly bought vegetables frozen if you aren’t going to use them immediately.

7. Store food in small portions for easy thawing

Take out only the required amount of frozen food you need to eat at a time. When buying and storing food in the freezer, ensure that your food is split into smaller portions, enough to satisfy you per serving, to make thawing easier later.

8. Heat frozen foods thoroughly before eating

If you still have some leftover from a meal cooked with frozen food, it can be frozen and defrosted at another time. However, ensure that you heat the food thoroughly before eating.

9. Thaw your food by refrigeration

When defrosting your frozen food items, take it out from the freezer and allow it to defrost slowly in the refrigerator. The coldness from the frozen food will be absorbed by the fridge, thereby helping you save energy. Defrosting food in the refrigerator also slows down the formation of bacteria due to low temperatures.

However, keep in mind that defrosting food in the refrigerator takes longer than defrosting at room temperature. Therefore, if you’re going to allow your food to defrost slowly in the refrigerator, do it long before you start cooking.

10. Ensure that the packaging is sealed tightly

When you freeze your food, make sure that the packaging is sealed tightly. When buying frozen foods from the supermarket, check to ensure that the packaging is sealed thoroughly to avoid freezer burn.

In a Nutshell

Finally, when it comes to meat, ensure that you heat it immediately after thawing. Moreover, do not thaw frozen foods by dunking them in the sink or bowl of water.

If you have limited time for thawing, use a microwave. Again, cook immediately after thawing with a microwave. To know more about your favorite frozen foods in Malaysia, including halal frozen food, feel free to get in touch with us.
